First plan of contents page


My rough layout for my contents page is as follows.  I want to create a contents page which uses Kerrang as a style model. I want to get as far away from creating my contents page in word processor because I feel that I have learnt from my preliminary task and know that the final piece is unprofessional and would not meet the demographics I am looking to require. Below is the rough draft of the graphology I would like to follow.

First plan of front cover


Below is a rough plan showing the layout I would like for my front cover, I have already thought of the linguistic elements I will be adding and the effect they will have. As mentioned before all the main text will be in the left third of the cover in case of horizontal displays all the text can be seen. The main colour them will evolve around black, dark greens and white because white is a good canvas to use for maximum contrast.

Textual analysis of language in rock magazines- what language and content will I put in my magazine?


Below I have taken an article from a double page spread from my style model (Kerrang) and deconstructed it in order to thoroughly see and understand the techniques and language used in an article so that I can apply it to my own double page spread, making it as realistic and professional as possible- always in keeping with my genre.


This was the amount of text that was shown on most of the double page spreads in Kerrang. It may seem as an easy way out but this is the amount of writing I will be doing in the double page spread of my magazine because I feel the main focus is on the band through the imagery of the photographs and the text isn't ignored but it is short and features a catch up with the band or artist.


As seen in my annotations below, dietic words such as "negative, punk, attitude" are used to with hold the representation that the magazine is trying to convey and that I will try to convey with my own magazine.


With all the elements of my magazine individually dealt with I feel I can now start piecing bits together to create a complete magazine look that is specific to my target audience and genre

Photo shoot done- what was achieved? 


After doing my photo shoot as planned I can now upload some of the pics I could use in my magazine and talk about why I think they would be effective.

This is the photo I have decided to use for my front cover. It is a head shot and Amelia is looking into the camera which is what I wanted to achieve because it feels as if she was looking at you, and gives more meaning to my front cover. Although you can't see what she is wearing, the genre is portrayed through her hair and her black leather jacket. She is shown slightly more to the right of this photo because when it comes to creating my magazine all the text will be placed in the left side third which is typical of magazines and is done incase of shelving being horizontal in a shop rather than vertical.

In this picture Amelia is sitting by the window that I described in my photo shoot planning. This photo will be used on my double page spread as the main picture. I like the mise-en-scene because the clouds are dark and moody which reflects the facial expression I was trying to create here. By looking away Amelia looks relaxed and carefree to her problems, which is another image that me be thought of when thinking of rebellion in the rock genre.





The following three pictures are pictures I will be using on the bottom of my double page spread, these images will be alot smaller and will be in black and white because I feel that black and white gives it a more professional look and it will add to my rock genre and the dark colours associated with it. By using a mix up of photos in my double page spread I feel the look of my magazine will be more realistic and the different pictures can portray different images and provoke different emotions in the reader. As these images aren't the main feature of my front cover or double page spread I don't feel it is as important for Amelia to be looking at the camera lense and these photos can be directed to a more stylistic aspect.

I am very happy with the look I have created in the photos and feel that I have achieved what I set out to do in terms of the photos for my print task. .

Planning a photo session

After choosing my model Amelia, I need to start thinking about what image I would like to create in my photo shoot and what message it will convey in terms of attracting my target audience and meeting the conventions of a rock magazine. 


Props?
I have decided to go against action shots in my magazine double page spread because after messing around with some drafts with the camera I have realised it is difficult to achieve a good effect that is realistic unless the model/artist is actually performing I.e. a band on stage. Therefore, I don't think I will be using props in my photos because after looking through other rock magazines with similar demographics such as Q, Classic Rock and Rock sound I found that props were not that common and are mostly used when following a specific theme within a genre such as a teddy bear photo shoot.


Styling
Seeing as Amelia already has the bold look that I required for my images through her hair I will be toning down the make up. I am going to use some dark eye make up but not too much to distract from the overall look, dark eye make up is seen across several rock/indie artists in relation to that rebellious and dark image which is required for my magazine. In accordance with this Amelia will be wearing dark and edgy clothes such as a short black skirt and patterned tights with rugged military boots all adding to the rebellion demographic.


Set
I have decided to use my own school as a set for the photo shoot. I chose to do this because I felt I found the perfect place and it would be less time consuming and practical. In the girls toilets there are large windows overlooking the rest of the school, however the school grounds look as if they are in a very urban and edgy area. This is exactly what I need because I feel the urban back ground will have good cohesion with the image of rebellion I am trying to create on the whole. 


Facial expressions
Using Kerrangs cover of artist HIM as inspiration I will be asking Amelia to keep fairly neutral facial expressions but always looking into the camera to obtain that connection between the artist and the reader. Which in turn can be a persuasive technique for an onlooker to but my magazine. 

The model I will be using

I will be using a friend of mine called Amelia.

Although stereotypical, I feel that Amelia would be the best person to use in terms of the demographics required for my magazine and target audience. Her image instantly conveys the conventions of what is expected of rock music and what a a potential buyer would aspire to look like. 

Layout/graphology of my magazine- fonts


I will be researching fonts to use before I begin making my music magazine. I think this is important because fonts found on photoshop or word are not adequate to fit the demographics of my magazine and I think they do not look professional.


As I have previously mentioned, the font used on rock music magazines and Kerrang in particular is distorted. Meaning that is has a rugged feel with pieces of the font missing as if it has been damaged, which is a reflection of the genre. I have been looking at a number of sites to which I can download font from to add to the style of my magazine, I came across 1001 free fonts which was good but I found it difficult to use. I have ended up looking at www.dafont.com which have categorized their fonts. One of the categories is distorted which I was pleased about but the category that I found my ideal font is called eroded.
